The numbers are staggering. Every day homeowners are at risk of losing their property or worse.
Consider the following: In 2004, an estimated 2.1 million burglary offenses were committed in the United States.
- Source: FBI Uniform Crime Report, In 2022, the average value stolen from residences during burglaries which occurred during the night amounted to 81,240 U.S. dollars while the average stolen value from burglaries which occurred in residences during the day was 55,744 U.S. dollars. The National Retail Federation reported that more retailers in America felt organized retail crime was a higher priority in 2023 (78.1%) compared to 2022 (70.7%). In addition, shoplifting statistics show that 88% of retailers say that shoplifters are at least somewhat more aggressive and violent compared to one year ago.

These fires caused an estimated 3,790 civilian deaths; 13,250 civilian injuries; and $18 billion in direct property damage. This report provides a breakdown of these fires. On average, a fire department responded to a fire somewhere in the US every 21 seconds in 2022. A civilian was fatally injured in a fire every two hours and 19 minutes. Every 40 minutes, a civilian suffered a non-fatal fire injury.

You can protect yourself.
The International Association of Police Chiefs states that professionally installed and monitored alarm systems are useful instruments to deter crime and provide peace of mind. The Center for Disease Control recommends installing a carbon monoxide detector for early detection of carbon monoxide in the home. And the US Fire Administration states that installing smoke detectors on every level of your home is the best safety measure for protecting your family and home.

BURGLARS GO SHOPPING WHILE YOU'RE ON VACATION
Picture this: you and your family are returning from a fun-filled vacation, ready to unpack and update the photo album. Only when you get home, you find the front door open, the back window broken, and valuables missing from all over the house, including your "clever" hiding places in the dresser and in the back of the freezer. You're not alone. Each year, nearly 5 million families become victims of household burglary, often while they've been away on vacation.
YOUR HOME SENDS SIGNALS
According to the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA), there are some simple steps you can take to make your home less attractive to would-be burglars. The best way is to combine the list of ideas below with a professionally installed and monitored electronic security alarm system in your home. Before you leave on your trip, pack your sunblock and be sure to:
-Have a neighbor pick up your newspapers and your mail for you daily.
-Lock all doors and windows, and secure the garage door.
-Leave a car parked in the driveway, or ask a neighbor to park in your driveway.
-Leave a house key - and a number where you can be reached - with a trusted friend or neighbor.
-Use timers to turn lights on and off at certain times, altering lighting patterns, to create an occupied look.
-Leave drapes and shades open as normal. (Closed blinds during the day are a sure sign of an empty house, plus they allow a burglar to attend to his business unseen by neighbors.)
-Arrange to have your lawn mowed.
-Be sure your trees and hedges have been trimmed. This gives burglars fewer places to hide.
-Replace any burned-out lights in your yard. Consider upgrading outdoor light fixtures with devices that have built-in motion detectors, which turn on the lights whenever anyone walks past.
